Every person from the poorest soul to the most brutal tyrant believes one thing fundamentally about themselves. This one thing allows them to continue on in whatever pursuit they are engaged in. This one thing allows them to stabilize their identity and hold onto a sense of self. Every person at their core believes they are truly good and moral, or if they have taken objectively evil actions, they were justified by the goodness of their vision.

Napoleon Crossing the Alps, Jacques-Louis David (1801)
