Holy shit, you're absolutely right. It's like losing a game of dodgeball and claiming the other team cheated. "Manipulation" is just a moralized synonym for influence with a shaming quality to it. Ultimately, if you or your people, nation, culture, religion, civilization has been successfully manipulated, it's because you lost. You remained passive and naive while your enemy was forecasting the future and plotting the possible pathways to their goals and influencing the institutions, social/cultural values, ideological movements that would allow those pathways to reveal themselves (and neutralize your ability to even see them clearly). This single essay just increased my emotional maturity stats. Excellent!

Not at all. But his work with herd morality and using virtue as an excuse for weakness are very prevalent to modern society.
